Mermaid Echo

they/them

Hudson, WI, USA

Echo is 243 years old (about 24 in human years). She was born as a princess to her father Triton, who rules the underwater world of Hy-Brasil Island. Hy-Brasil is a mystical, floating island off the west coast of Ireland that appears only once to human eyes every 7 years. It is filled with all things mystical - from mermaids to unicorns to fairies oh my! It was forbidden for creatures to leave the protection of the island, until one day tiny particles in the water began making Triton’s subjects ill. They came in from beyond the barriers of Hy-Brasil and a solution had to be found! Triton chose Echo as the warrior to follow the trail of particles and stop them in order to save her friends and protect her ocean home. Echo embarked on an epic journey across the 7 seas to find the source of the particles. Along the way she met all kinds of creatures who tell her what they know: The particles are microplastics, they come from humans, and children are the only hope of ending the cycle. Eventually Echo finds the children (at libraries, schools, fairs, festivals, and other public events) and tells them of her long journey. She teaches them about microplastics and how kids can reduce single use waste and replace their products with sustainable solutions. At the end of every event, children take a magical mermaid pledge to protect water creatures!

Mist is a princess from the Sea of Capricorn who travels with pirates on a mission to unite the seven seas.

The title "Olive the Alchemist" comes from honoring the countless tiny tasks that I do that go into being a real mermaid princess. Breath holds, swimming skill, poise and grace, compassion, water competency, camera ability, post production skills, empathy, improvisation training, certifications, insurance; Each skill on its own seems entirely nonspiritual, but when combined, can create a truly magical presence online that is a powerful message of hope. I consider myself a mermaid because being one has helped me share the most authentic version of myself as well as a message of hope and togetherness with other humans who have felt the same way I do and need acceptance, too.

Whimzsea

she/her

Sacramento, CA, USA

I originated in the warm waters off Mykonos Island, but when still very young I fled far north and then inland to escape human hunters that captured and killed my pod. Thinking myself safe, I made a home in the lakes and rivers, far from the warm waters I was used to. When humans came inland again I did not flee. Grown now and much stronger, I sought to band together the other freshwater merfolk, to hold fast and fight back.

I have always, always felt at Home in the water. Due to my vision, I could swim before I could walk, and as I grew up, both because of my eyes and my size, I found I could do AMAZING things underwater, that I could never possibly do on land. In the water I'm not afraid to open my eyes, nor to take a tumble off a stair or sidewalk crevice I don't see, there are no unexpected falls or walls.. and when I'm underwater it's a WORLD of freedom, wonder & never-ending discovery & peace. So when I first saw "Splash" as a kid, my soul just said "yes, THAT'S it. That's my heart." Later I ended up seeing the mers at Weeki Watchee as a teen, and wanted SO badly to join them, but because of my weight feared I wouldn't be accepted. But I kept an eye on how tails were gradually becoming more available to interested parties, and just held onto my dreams. Then, decades later, after seeing some amazingly motivational videos by Joy Nash (called "Fat Rants, 1-3), I decided to pursue my dream of trying bellydance. I got immediately hooked, & years later, while researching bellydance opportunities in a city for a potential move, I just decided on a whim to google "Portland" & "mermaids." From there I found the Northwest Mer Pod, saw my first plus size mermaid, and burst into tears.. with the realization that my dream could FINALLY become a reality... So I crossed the country to pursue my dreams of becoming a mermaid & performer, and this is where I found my pod, my life's path, and now this world incorporates everything I love into one beautiful, empowering realm, and allows me to live my own dream, while inspiring & teaching others. ♥♥

Emily
the Joliet Mermaid

she/her

Joliet, IL, USA

Raised in the crystal clear waters of the Florida Springs, Mermaid Emily made her way north and now calls the waters of Lake Michigan her home. Emily’s love of mermaids started, like many, with Disney’s the Little Mermaid. She also visited the mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs as a child and has longed to be one ever since! As an adult, finding the Illinois Merpod is what really got her “hooked”, having places to swim, and friends to swim with. She now performs professionally with the Windy City Mermaids.

My love for mermaids in general began when I first saw The Little Mermaid at the El Capitan. Not only was it my first viewing of the film, it was my first in-theatre movie EVER. The film also left an indelible mark on me for my love of redheads in addition to the fact that my mother is a redhead. All this to say that I fell in love with the girl who wanted to explore beyond her own world. This sparked an interest in me to further explore underwater sea life and the deepest, creepiest parts of the ocean. I get my energy from fresh water and have vowed to always live within driving distance of natural bodies of water.

I am The Hawaiian Mermaid. I started teaching special education swim lessons and would tell my students that I was a mermaid. They would run to their friends and say that they learned how to swim from an actual mermaid. Once I graduated college I decided to take on my role to further help the community.

Hey Merfam, it's Mermaid Minnow! I'm a forest dwelling river Mermaid who enjoys lazily swimming around and bathing in th e sun. I tend to be a little shy around people I don't know but as soon as you get to know me, you'll find that I love splashing and goofing around! I first decided to become a mermaid after seeing a fashion Instagram account post a photo of them in a mermaid tail. I was completely mesmerized by the idea of people being real mermaids, and wanted a new way to be active. So it wasn't long after that that I got my first mermaid tail and the rest is merstory!

Mermaid Montara

she/her

Seattle, Washington, USA

I became interested in mermaiding after seeing how Hannah Mermaid used her mermaiding and underwater modeling career as a platform to discuss environmentalism and conservation. I was asked to fill in and perform at a LARP I had previously worked for when a professional called out and I've never looked back!

Mermaid Montara is a shy, bubbly mermaid who travels to meet new people and teach about the oceans and their inhabitants. Much like in the ocean, the people on land come in all shapes, colors, and sizes. Mermaid Montara is an advocate for inclusion and body positivity and also encourages healthy living, an active lifestyle, and loving yourself.

Marlayna Mer

she/they

Rio Grande, Puerto Rico

I decided to become a mermaid because my whole life I have felt like a fish out of water, like I never really fit in with regular people, so I figured at this point in my life, why not lean in and be the person that makes me happy. Growing in up in Puerto Rico I have always had a deep love of the ocean and desire to protect it from an early age. As an Autistic person with ADHD, being under water brings a quiet to my mind like nothing else on the surface. I feel as though I was born a mermaid and it has only been recently as an adult (with adult money and freedom) that I have finally been able to manifest my tail. Despite having an academic background in Theater Education, life has not afforded me many opportunities to work in this field. I feel that being a mermaid in many ways is theater and using this mersona to teach people about environmental conservation is education, thus making an empowered and intentional life choice (as opposed to doing survival work due to circumstances) while fulfilling my long time career goals.

Rehoboth Beach Mermaid

she/her

Kent County, DE, USA

Hi! I am The Pink Lady MerRanger! I created The Pink Lady Ranger in 2016. I have always loved mermaids. I am a huge fan of Splash, H2O, that super small clip from Hook that I’m sure all mers watched on repeat, and sirens! I grew up swimming like a mermaid and always beating everyone at holding my breath underwater! Little did I know this world existed. I am so blessed to have found the merfolk world! It never felt like a decision but more like fate.

Mermaid Jacy

Brampton, ON, Canada

While struggling with many health issues, low confidence, and a low feeling of self worth I made my first tail in 2019. I've been following the social media mermaids for many years and thought maybe this mix of fantasy and fitness would help me with my physical and mental health struggles. Then Mermaid Jacy was born.

Aqua Sherene

she/her

Sav la Mar, Jamaica

I was born off the west coast of the continent of Africa. My people are protectors. We protect the people who venture into the vast oceans. And we protect the ocean and the creatures that live there. I loved my home but I needed more. I wanted to be where people really needed me. So I said goodbye and with a few friends, we ventured to parts of the ocean my people had never been. We swam so long and so far. We saw many peoples and places along the way but none of them felt like home. That, is until we arrived off the coast of a small island called Jamaica. Immediately I knew that we were belonged here so, we stayed. Now we protect these water and these people... until they misbehave...

Yl'luria

Esmerelda La Sirena

she/her

Sacramento, CA, USA

I became mermaid Esmerelda out of the need to affect political change without having to run for office. I felt that drownings in this country happen far too often and close calls get a little too close for comfort while traumatizing the people closest to the event. Esmerelda was born in the waters of Miami Beach three years after a scuba diving trip in the Philippines. My perspective was changed completely after learning to breathe underwater and I believe that if children can see what is underwater, they will treat the water with much more love and respect.

The Vintage Glam Mermaid was created on self love, body positivity and growth. I became a mermaid in hopes to inspire others to follow their dreams and ambitions. I want others to feel like that they are not restricted to a norm. There is no norm to being a mermaid. Self love and self care is another passion of mine and its so important to take care of ones mental, physical, and emotional health and its okay to prioritize ones self. I also hope to inspire others to be kind, to lift others up along the way one their own individual mermaid journey. I feel like the mermaid community was built on the idea of kindness and acceptance for all but sometimes it gets out of sight.

Northern Sea Witch

she/her

Fairfax Station, VA,

I am a 270-year-old sea-witch that was born right before Samhain, and have lived on a small island off the west side of the mainland, of what is now known as Florida. At least, I lived there up until recently. My family and I were the guardians of the pearl cove on the island, Captiva Island. As the island became more populated, I became known as the Pearl of the South Seas. While the southern seas are filled with mermaids and other merfolk swimming about in the waters, I spent my time between land and the water. As a sea witch, I have the natural ability to change from fins to legs.

While my family had moved on to another island to assist with ocean conversation, I stayed on Captiva, ensuring the island’s pearl cove stayed safe, that the tourists from South Seas Resort did not ruin the ecosystem, and that the Red Tide that had been lurking around Florida since the mid-1800s didn’t cause everlasting harm. Unfortunately, that all changed when the Red Tide reemerged several years ago. I had been in the middle of swimming with the local dolphin pod, when the Red Tide caught up to me.

I did not escape unscathed, unfortunately. While I still have some sea magic, my magical levels were greatly diminished. I left Captiva Island in the care of my uncle and came idea of doing a photoshoot dine-in, and ranking a restaurant based on the point system already in place, which will boost the signal of mermaids and the non-profit organization. While Fairfax 350 already has several restaurants in Gold and Silver status, but I want to increase the list and bring attention to local restaurants that may not know about it, encouraging them to be more eco-friendly in their takeout and dining endeavors.

I’ve always been a mermaid since I was little, but in recent years I decided to really pursue it to finally not just live dreams of my own, but also be a part of giving dreams to kids who looked like me but didn’t see themselves in mermaids, like how I grew up.

I have had a draw to the water my entire life, and most of my years I have lived on or near the water. Growing up in Florida I went to Weeki Wachee several times a year and would pretend I was a mermaid by tying a ribbon around my ankles and knees while wearing my flippers to swim. At the beginning of the pandemic I ordered my first tail to complete my dream. I now have seven tails and am in the process of creating my first neoprene tail and silicone top.

she/her

Cutchogue, NY, USA

Mermaid Raelyn is from the underwater kingdom of Athinao. Merfolk from Athinao were never allowed to visit the “Shore”until recently. Now they've started sending ambassadors to the Shore to learn more about humans and their mysterious ways. And to also teach the humans about Merfolk. Raelyn was lucky enough to be selected as an ambassador from Athinao and is very excited to be living on the Shore.

While I first got a tail in 2014, I definitely have been a mermaid at heart since day one. In the words of my Papou, I swim like a fish. Every summer I would spend countless days in my grandparents' pool, swimming around, and barely coming out until dinner. So swimming around in a tail on those hot summer days only enhanced the experience. The reason why I continue to enjoy being a mermaid is not just because it's fun, I've met so many amazing new friends both on and offline, as well as it's a huge confidence booster. I don't feel like it's bad to be the weird kid when I'm a mermaid and I have a more positive view of my body. Being a mermaid helps me to be proud of who I am as a person.
